How to Tie a 35-Inch Square

One size, endless ways to wear it. Here are the measurements, six easy knots, and how to keep the satin looking new.

01The measurements

Size About 35 x 35 in (90 x 90 cm); one size

A 35-inch square is the traditional large size. It is big enough to cover the hair or drape the shoulders, yet it folds down small enough to sit neatly at the neck.

02Two folds to learn first

The triangle

Lay the scarf flat, print side down, and fold one corner to meet the opposite corner. Almost every head and shoulder style starts here.

The band

From the triangle, fold the long edge up towards the point in 3-inch folds until you have a strip. Use it for neck knots, hair wraps and bag handles. Folding from corner to corner in this way gives you the longest band.

03Six ways to wear it

Neck

The Classic Knot

  1. Fold the square corner to corner into a triangle, then roll or fold it from the long edge into a band about 3 inches wide.
  2. Drape it round the back of your neck with the ends in front, one slightly longer.
  3. Tie a loose single knot to one side of your collarbone and let the ends fall.

Neck

The Soft Cowl

  1. Fold into a triangle and place the point at your chest, ends over your shoulders.
  2. Cross the ends behind your neck and bring them back to the front.
  3. Tie them under the point, then tuck the knot beneath the drape for a soft, open neckline.

Hair

The Head Scarf

  1. Fold into a triangle and lay the long edge across your forehead or just behind your hairline.
  2. Take the ends round to the nape of your neck, over the point.
  3. Tie a secure double knot and tuck the point in, or let it hang for a vintage look.

Hair

The Ponytail Wrap

  1. Fold into a narrow band about 2 inches wide.
  2. Wrap it twice round a ponytail or low bun, over your hair tie.
  3. Knot it and let the ends trail, or tie a loose bow.

Bag

The Handle Tie

  1. Fold into a slim band about 1.5 inches wide.
  2. Knot one end at the base of a bag handle and wrap the band snugly up and around it.
  3. Knot at the other end, or tie a bow and let the tails fly.

Shoulders

The Shoulder Drape

  1. Fold into a triangle.
  2. Lay it over your shoulders like a small shawl, point at your back.
  3. Knot the ends loosely in front, or fasten with a brooch.

Tip: satin is slippery. A double knot holds best in the hair, and a single loose knot drapes best at the neck.

04Caring for your scarf

  • Hand wash cold with a little mild detergent. Swish gently; do not wring.
  • Dry flat: roll it in a towel to press out the water, then lay it flat away from direct sun.
  • Iron cool on the reverse, or hang it in a steamy bathroom to let small creases fall out.
  • Put on perfume and hairspray before your scarf, and keep jewellery clasps from catching the satin.
  • Store it folded or rolled in a drawer, or knotted loosely over a hanger.
